Many people are going back to school while the unemployment rate is high.
Some of those students found a career path at Tennessee Technical Center.
The school just graduated nearly 230 students on August 25, 2010.
One graduate says he finally has a job that makes him love going to work.
The crowd applauds for Jerry Hancock as he receives his diploma from the surgical technology program.
It's a blessing for Jerry.
You see, he worked 17 years for a company, before they moved their operations to Mexico and laid him off.
Jerry Hancock says, "You give a company 17 years of your life and all of a sudden you're a used up commodity."
Downhearted and confused, he decided to go back to school. Now he has his degree, along with 228 other graduates in his class.
Jerry even has a job. He starts tomorrow in the operating room at a local hospital.
Jerry Hancock says, "It's great, I mean it's about all a person can expect. I mean the teachers the staff they were there from the start and the job placements went really well."
Jerry's wife, Vicki, is glowing with pride for her husband.
Vicki Hancock says, "Very proud. Very, very proud because he's really worked hard for this and he deserves it."
She says he's spent nights and a lot of early mornings studying. But she said it's all worth it because now he has a job he wants.
Vicki Hancock says, "I think that's important. You know you go to work every day anyway. So it's important to do something that you love."
A new job and a new career for Jerry who just a few months ago was unemployed and unsure of where his future would lead.
